A Trusted House Sitter: Invaluable

June 20, 2013

At some time or another everyone has to leave their home for a period of time. Whether it be for a day, a week, or a month, and whether you are away for work, a holiday, family matters or a hospital stay, there are things to be done so that your home remains safe and cared for.

Recently I was fortunate to spend a week in Scotland with friends. A few years ago this would have been a logistical nightmare this time of year. But since I found my incredible house sitter, Chris, leaving my home is totally without stress.

I make sure that I phone him as soon as I know my plans and we usually meet once, in my home, to go over the details regarding home care and pet care-yes, he looks after my cat as well. He is just the best.

This trip involved a lot of outdoor work for my house sitter as I had new planting, new grass seed (an ongoing war with grubs), and dying cedar trees. As well, my 13 1/2 year old cat's very finicky, so routines are very important.

Chris handled it all with great attention to detail, as he always does. His meticulous care, plus the rain that fell endlessly while I was away, made my arrival home a very happy event. When I pulled into my driveway my home looked amazing: the grass was lush and cut. Flowers closed when I left were blooming brightly, and the front door area was pristine with no flyers and old newspapers.

People often raise an eyebrow when I tell them that I have a house sitter when I am away. But for me it is not a luxury. I go away with the confidence that my home looks lived in while I am away, is well cared for, that my cat is getting TLC and that I will come relaxed, knowing that there will be no unwanted surprises. Worth every penny!!
