I'm an
Individual
My name is Joseph Michael Kai-tsu Liu Roqueñi. I am a “Chexican”: Chinese father, Mexican mother born in Canada (Richmond Hill, Ontario) in 1981. A truly Canadian story: My dad is from the 50’s, his family was running away from Chinese communism and after few decades ended up in Montreal meeting my mom who was running away from an ex from Mexico apparently. I am the third of 10 siblings. My parents took me to Mexico when I was 7 months old and by the age of 9 my mom passed away due to an accident with our boiler at home. I don’t know how my dad managed to raise the 10 of us but he did a quite decent job. I always wanted to stand out from just being average; I want to transcend. In Mexico, believe it or not, I played ice hockey and made it to Nationals and Junior Olympics representing Jalisco state by the age of 17. When I turned 18 I decided to learn my dad’s language and went to Taipei for two months to study Mandarin but didn’t like the experience at all so that was the end of it and returned to Mexico. By the time I was 20, I failed two classes in my Industrial Engineering undergrad degree thus lost my scholarship and since I hated the mentality in Mexico, I decided it was time to come back to Canada. Don’t get me wrong I love Mexico, beautiful country and people, but there are so many wrong things happening there I can tell you all about it another time. In 2004, I got accepted into Concordia University in Montreal but had to start my degree all over again. Independence and cultural adaptation wasn’t easy so didn’t became an engineer until 2013, same year I decided to see the world on foot so I wanted to run across the continent barefoot all the way to Ushuaia (“The End of the World”). I made it to the border of Mexico and Guatemala from Montreal; yes I ran 4,654 km solo and semi-barefoot in the spam of 18 months and then I became 2014 Male Runner of the Year according to Canadian Magazine (https://....ca/). What does semi-barefoot mean? Well you'll have to go to my website to find out: www.....com. I had some personal issues that forced me to come back to Canada. A very good friend of mine, Roberto (from http://....com/), he is like family to me, kept telling me to come to Whistler so I did and he was right I loved it. Here is a little article for a better perspective on my arrival to Whistler: https://....com. Whistler is not the greatest market for an industrial engineer without experience so I remember when I was younger I took one of those basic photography courses that everyone takes. More over, during my North American run where I spent 18 months in a row in a different place almost every day and posting about it in Social Media, taught me a little bit more about photography and blogging or may be realized how little I knew about both. So looking for work in Whistler lucky I was hired by Coast Mountain Photography and became a “professional” photographer. Two years ago, I ended up being the On-Mountain photographer top 2 in sales on my first winter and top 1 in sales last winter. Unfortunately, last March snowboarding to my post on Zig-Zag I caught an edge, tumbled off-piste and pin-balled the trees 30-40 meters down the hill to find out my femur was shutter in four pieces. So I am half way the first phase of my recovery looking for a place to live in Whistler since the place I currently live in does AirBandB during the winter. I know there are quite a few houses bought as a vacation retreats and remain empty most of the year. So I was just wondering if you wanted to get involved in this amazing journey by providing a home. I can house sit your property so I can recover and eventually get my training going to resume my running projects across the Globe. The vision is that your house will become the Run2theEnd expeditions home base and you can tell your friends all about it. I live with my significant other Iris, who is from Mexico, we met in grade 7, she was my first kiss but that same year we broke up and never kept in touch until 20 years after. We reconnected during my crossing through Mexico and ended up together and now I am sponsoring her so she can live with me in Canada and become a resident and eventually a Canadian citizen. She is a florist and had a flower arrangement business for 13 years and she’ll probably pursue the same path here in Whistler as soon as she gets the residency. For me, seems like photography is a good gig to make a living during my training periods. So that’s my story. We don't have to become friends but if we do that's ok because I think that's what we are all about. People keep asking why we are here in this world and try to find meaning. Well, stop searching because let me tell you, I believe we are here to find friends, simple as that, everything else comes and goes eventually but friends always stay friends and will always be there for you. Cheers,
